The Wildschönau is the collective name for the four separate ski resorts of Niederau, Oberau, Auffach and Mühltal. Extensive nursery slopes and very attentive ski schools and the après-ski is lively and intimate, thanks to many returning visitors.
On the slopes
The Wildschönau ski region, set in a north-facing valley between the Wilder Kaiser and the Kitzbühel Alps, is one of our favourite ski areas particularly for beginner and intermediate groups. Oberau, lying at the heart of the ski area, has all the warmth and atmosphere typical of villages in the Tyrol. Auffach, Oberau and Niederau provide a wide range of enjoyable skiing on tree-lined pistes, suitable for all levels of ability. Beginners can start on the wide nursery slopes at Oberau whilst in Niederau novices practice around the Markbachjoch summit. Intermediates can attempt the long, north-facing red runs from this area. Further opportunities lie at Auffach, an area reached by the Schatzbergbahn. From here, new lifts have opened up a sequence of blue and red runs around the Schatzberg summit at 1,903m. Adventurous skiers will enjoy the mogul field at Auffach and the speedy can test their skills on the Giant Slalom at Niederau. A planned link with nearby Alpbachtal should be in place by 2012- 13, boosting the overall size of the resort to well over 120km.
Off the slopes
Wildschönau offers a variety of après-ski activities including iceskating, discos and sleigh rides. Groups can also enjoy the indoor swimming pool and flumes in the nearby town of Wörgl.
