The well known skiing area of Saalbach-Hinterglemm, situated in the Glemm Valley, offers a great ski circuit with 200km of piste covering both sides of the valley, combined with a good snow record and plenty of snow-making facilities.
On the slopes
This is a resort for all grades of skier with plenty of blue and red runs, and challenging blacks too. Provided you start early enough you will be able to ski around the entire circus in a day without using the same lift twice. Groups start in Vorderglemm or Hinterglemm depending on their choice of accommodation. Both villages have nursery slopes for beginners before they progress to the higher slopes, featuring wide tree-lined skiing. The interconnecting lift system allows skiers to cover large areas each day. Highly recommended also are the wide runs down the Zwölferkogel, the Schattberg west or the red runs on the Reiterkogel. For advanced skiers there are plenty of challenges; the steep black down Schattberg Ost is well known and, being on the north side of the mountain, has excellent snow until late into the season. Five runs are set aside especially for mogul skiing and there are also three special carving trails. Saalbach offers excellent facilities for snowboarders, including several half pipes and a flood-lit Fun Park.
Off the slopes
Both Saalbach and Hinterglemm are lively resorts with plenty of shops, bars and discos. Evening activities include bowling in Bobby’s and ice-skating and curling in Hinterglemm. The picturesque lakeside town of Zell am See is only 25 minutes away by coach, with its sports centre with an indoor swimming pool and ice-rink where major league ice hockey matches are regularly played.
