Serre Chevalier is situated in the Hautes Alpes and comprises four interlinked areas - Chantemerle (1,350m), Monêtier (1,500m), Villeneuve (1,400m) and Briançon (1,200m). This vast ski circuit is a great choice for all grades of skiers and whilst much of the skiing is above the tree line, Serre Chevalier is renowned for its attractive runs through pine forests.
On the slopes
Gondolas and cable cars serve the 250km of marked piste above and below the tree line in the Serre Chevalier ski area, which stretches out above the town and across three ski villages. Spectacular mountain scenery and lots of sunshine complement the skiing, and the terrain is varied, with plenty of choice for all levels of ability. For beginners alone there are 23 green runs, ranging from nursery slopes to scenic runs on the mountain tops. Intermediates can choose from 39 varied red runs, many of which take skiers through the woods and provide challenging descents. There is extensive off-piste and adventurous black run skiing for advanced skiers, including the super fast Luc Alphand Olympic piste named after the local boy turned Olympic Gold medalist, massive moguls and steep descents. Serre Chevalier is superb for snowboarding, with plenty of natural half-pipes and a snow park.
Off the slopes
Villeneuve has its own outdoor skating rink and shops, Monêtier is well known for its hot spring baths, whilst nearby Briançon has indoor skating, indoor ‘fun pool’ and a sports centre. Briançon also boasts great shopping and the opportunity to explore the 13th century fortified old town. A bus service (free with lift pass) links Briançon to the other villages in the valley and departs approximately every 20 minutes.
